Field notes

What failed, what we did, what stayed open

Each note is short on purpose: the store type, the problem, the work and what the store could do while we worked.

  • Large fan inside a white commercial condenser housing
    Grocery, 14 doors

    Condenser fan, overnight

A fan motor seized on the roof at 1 a.m. Head pressure climbed and two cases alarmed before the night crew noticed.

    • Motor and capacitor on the truck

    • Cases back in range before the doors opened

    • Written report left for the manager

  • Metal pipes and ducts crossing a timber ceiling
    Grocery, five compressors

    Rack controller swap, store open

An old controller lost its settings twice in a month. We staged the swap circuit by circuit so no case lost cooling.

    • One circuit down at a time

    • Alarm routing tested before we left

    • Old settings saved to the store file

  • Rooftop air handler and two small condensers on a snowy flat roof
    Discount store, two rooftop units

    Winter clean-out on the roof

Coils packed with debris and a fan guard rattling. We cleaned, tightened and read amp draws before the first hard freeze.

    • Coils cleaned, fins combed

    • Fan and motor readings written down

    • Roof drain cleared

  • Open-front refrigerated produce case stocked with fruit under strip lights
    Grocery, open multi-deck

    Produce wall drain and defrost

Water pooled under the case every morning. A blocked drain line and a defrost that ran long were the cause.

    • Drain cleared and sloped

    • Defrost termination reset

    • Floor dry for the next delivery

  • Pair of gray louvered double doors on a mechanical room wall
    Convenience, three walk-ins

    Walk-in door and evaporator

A beer cave door would not seal and the evaporator iced over. New gasket and heater, then a defrost schedule that fits the delivery days.

    • Door hung true, gasket replaced

    • Evaporator thawed and checked

    • Delivery days written on the schedule

  • Rooftop air handlers and sheet-metal ductwork on a flat commercial roof
    Grocery remodel, two phases

New condenser pad for a remodel

A remodel moved the cases and the machine room. We set the new condenser, ran the line set and kept the old circuit alive until cutover.

    • Phase plan agreed with the general contractor

    • Cutover on a closed night

    • Start-up readings in the closeout file
